Windows 98 Nostalgia: We Built a Game That Takes Programmers Back to the 90s

A free nostalgic clicker sim about the journey from machine code to the modern AI & Cloud era, built in the style of old-school computer interfaces.

We built WinCode 98 — a free programmer clicker sim styled after old-school computer interfaces.

It's a game for people who love code, retro aesthetics, idle/clicker games, and that feeling of slow, satisfying progress. We didn't want to make just another clicker — we wanted to capture the atmosphere of the 90s: grey windows, pixel buttons, plain menus, system alerts, and that exact mood of an old computer.

In WinCode 98, the player follows a programmer's journey from the very beginning all the way to the modern AI & Cloud era. The core mechanic clicks into place within seconds: tap to write code, earn money from projects, buy upgrades, and level up your programmer across 5 technology eras.

But progress in the game isn't just bigger numbers. Each new era feels like the next step in the history of programming.

5 Eras of Programming History

  • Machine Era the beginning: raw commands and machine-level thinking.
  • Procedural Era the age of functions, algorithms, and structured code.
  • OOP Era classes, objects, architecture, and more complex projects.
  • Internet Era the web, servers, networks, and online products.
  • AI & Cloud Era the modern stage: cloud tech, automation, and artificial intelligence.

Upgrades, Projects, and Random Events

To keep the run from feeling repetitive, the game includes upgrades, projects, and random events. Upgrades help you grow faster. Projects open up new possibilities.

Random events keep things dynamic. Sometimes a client leaves a tip, giving the player a welcome bonus. Other times a challenge appears that needs solving — pull it off and you'll earn a reward that accelerates your programmer's growth.

Because programming isn't always a straight line. Sometimes everything works on the first try. Sometimes there's a bug. Sometimes an unexpected event changes the whole pace of the game.

Retro Style Inspired by the 90s

Visually, we designed WinCode 98 in a retro style inspired by late-90s interfaces. We wanted the game to look like something you could have found on an old computer — but still feel comfortable for a modern player.

WinCode 98 is free to play. We want as many players as possible to try it, walk the path from Machine Era to AI & Cloud, and soak in the nostalgic atmosphere of an old computer.

WinCode 98 is worth trying if you're a programmer, or anyone who loves clicker games, retro computers, and the story of how technology evolved.
